A stainless outdoor gas pizza oven on a patio counter in plain afternoon light, its door off and the pizza oven stone floor cold and empty, the burner channel along the back dark with no flame, the knob at the front.

Gas Pizza Oven Won't Light: Clicks, Gas Hiss, Still No Flame

A gas pizza oven won't light when the knob turns and the igniter clicks but no flame rolls along the burner, or when a deck oven's ignition tries, stops and locks out before any flame is proven.

What it
usually means.

Lighting a gas pizza oven takes gas at the burner, air mixed into it and a spark or a glowing igniter in exactly the right spot, all within a few seconds. Outdoor countertop and built-in ovens mostly use a push-button spark and a knob that must be held in while a thermocouple warms. Commercial deck ovens use either a standing pilot or electronic ignition that sparks, watches for a flame and shuts the gas if none appears. Conveyor ovens refuse to light at all until their blowers are running and an air switch confirms airflow. So a dark burner can have nothing broken: an empty propane tank, a regulator in its low-flow safety mode, a shutoff closed after cleaning, a battery gone in the spark module, or a cover still on an air intake. After that come spiders in the burner tube, a wet electrode after rain, an igniter worn or cracked, and a flame sensor too coated to see the flame. Every attempt leaves gas in the oven, so the rule is knob off, door open and a wait of several minutes, or as long as the manual asks, between tries.

A technician in a plain gray work shirt kneels beside a cold stainless outdoor pizza oven on a patio, shining a small flashlight into the pizza oven's mouth at the stone floor, the burner shield visible at the back, his hands away from any gas fitting, plants softly blurred behind, daylight, seasonless. The 7 causes, cheapest first

Answer these first

01

Do you hear the igniter click and see a spark, or is it silent?

02

Is there a faint gas smell at the mouth when the knob is on, or none?

03

Is it a propane tank, and does it feel light when lifted?

04

On a deck or conveyor oven, does it try, stop and show a light or a code?

05

Has the oven sat unused or uncovered through rain or a quiet season?

Gas pizza oven won't light: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

If the burner does not catch within a few seconds, turn the knob off, leave the door open and wait at least five minutes, or the time in the manual, before trying again.

02

Lift the propane tank to judge its level and make sure its valve and any shutoff are open.

03

With the knob off, close the tank, wait a minute, open it slowly, then light the way the manual shows.

Also worth checking

  • On a push-button oven, fit a fresh battery in the spark module if it has one, and give a rain-soaked oven a dry day.
  • On a conveyor oven, check that the blowers are running and the intakes are uncovered before asking for heat.

How soon does it need a visit?

A dark burner is not urgent on its own. A gas smell is, and it has its own page. Book once the tank, the regulator reset and the battery are ruled out and it still will not light.

The causes,

7 things gas pizza oven won't light: clicks, gas hiss, still no flame turns out to be, from propane empty or supply shutoff closed to gas valve or ignition module failing.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

Propane empty or supply shutoff closed

A light tank or a valve left closed after cleaning leaves nothing to light. Refill or reopen it slowly, with the burner knob off first.

  2. 02 no repair

Regulator in its low-flow safety mode

Opening a propane tank with the knob already on can make the regulator limit flow to a trickle. Knob off, tank closed, a minute's wait, then reopen slowly and light as the manual says.

  3. 03 lowest

Spark module battery flat or electrode wet

A weak click and no spark often means a dead battery in the push-button module, or an electrode still damp after rain. A fresh battery or a dry day often cures it; if not, the igniter is checked.

  4. 04 low

Burner tube blocked by webs or ash

Spiders love the burner tubes of an oven that sits for weeks, and ash can drift in from a hybrid oven's wood side. The tube and ports are cleaned on a visit.

  5. 05 low to moderate

Igniter cracked or flame sensor coated

A cracked ceramic igniter sparks to the wrong place, and a sensor glazed with carbon cannot prove the flame, so the module shuts the gas. Both are tested and replaced as needed.

  6. 06 moderate

    Conveyor blower not proving airflow

A conveyor oven will not open its gas until its blower runs and the air switch closes. A slipping blower belt, a clogged intake or a stuck switch stop ignition entirely.

  7. 07 moderate to highest

Gas valve or ignition module failing

When gas, spark and air all check out, the valve that should open or the module that runs the sequence is tested and replaced.

Questions about
gas pizza oven won't light: clicks, gas hiss, still no flame.

Why must the knob be held in for a while on an outdoor gas pizza oven?
Holding it in lets gas flow while the thermocouple warms. Once it is warm, it keeps the safety valve open by itself; let go too early and the flame goes out.
The deck oven tries to light three times, then gives up. What is happening?
Electronic ignition sparks, looks for a flame and shuts the gas if it sees none, and after a few tries it locks out. A worn igniter or a coated flame sensor is the usual reason.
Can a gas pizza oven be lit with a long match when the spark fails?
Only if your manual describes a match-lighting method for that model, and only exactly as written. Otherwise wait for a repair; never lean into the mouth to light it.
Why will the conveyor oven not light until the fans are on?
It is a safety interlock: without proven airflow the burner would overheat the cavity and the gas would not mix properly. A blower problem shows up as a no-light.
