Bakers Pride pizza ovens,
specifically.

Bakers Pride started in the Bronx in the mid-1940s and still builds pizzeria deck ovens: gas Superdeck floor models, the IL Forno Classico open-flame ovens, electric decks and countertop HearthBake ovens. The controls are mechanical, a standing pilot, a gas cock dial and a dial thermostat, so a visit reads flames, dampers and temperatures rather than a display.

Error codesBakers Pride pizza ovens do not show error codes: the gas decks run on a standing pilot, a gas cock dial and a dial thermostat. The lamps they do have, such as the amber booster lamp on the IL Forno and the element and steam lamps on electric decks, only show that a circuit is on.

to Bakers Pride.

Gas Superdeck floor models (the 100 to 805 series and the Y-600 and Y-800), IL Forno Classico FC open-flame ovens that can stack on a deck oven, EP and EB electric decks, and countertop HearthBake and GP ovens. The series decides the burner layout, the deck material and whether there is any electrical part at all.

A pilot meant to burn around the clock

Bakers Pride expects the pilot on its gas decks to stay lit day and night, weekends included, because that is easier on the safety valve. A pilot that keeps going out is a problem worth chasing, not a habit to live with.

Hold the dial for half a minute

Lighting means pressing the gas cock dial and holding it about 30 seconds after the pilot catches, and the safety valve only opens fully to the burners a minute or two later. Letting go early is the usual reason a pilot drops out right after lighting.

Micro slides trade top heat for bottom

The Superdeck ovens use push-pull micro slides to balance heat over and under the pizza. Burnt bottoms with pale toppings often come from slides closed too far or from a thermostat left high through slow periods, not from a failed part.

IL Forno's booster flame needs a plug

The visible flame at the back of an IL Forno is a booster burner with hot-surface ignition, wired through the oven's power cord. It is set to burn with a yellow flicker, so a yellow flame there is normal, while a booster that will not light starts with the outlet.

Parts

Decks, thermostats, safety pilot valves and flame diverters are matched to the model on the rating plate. Countertop models have their own replacement decks and control panels.

Repair or replace

A Bakers Pride deck oven is a steel box with a burner, a valve and a thermostat, so almost everything that fails can be replaced piece by piece. Cracked decks and worn flame diverters are routine work; a rusted-through combustion chamber is the point to compare against a new oven.

Questions about
Bakers Pride pizza ovens.

Should I turn off the pilot on my Bakers Pride deck oven at night?
No. Bakers Pride expects the pilot to stay lit day and night and says the oven should be turned down to the Pilot position overnight rather than left on a high setting.
Why does my Bakers Pride pilot go out as soon as I let go of the dial?
The dial has to be held about 30 seconds after the pilot lights so the safety valve can take over. If it still goes out after a proper hold, the thermocouple or the safety valve needs a technician.
Why are my Bakers Pride pizzas burning on the bottom?
The maker points to a deck left too hot through slow periods and micro slides closed too far. Drop the thermostat 50 to 75 degrees while it is quiet and open the slides to add top heat.
Is a yellow flame normal on a Bakers Pride IL Forno?
On the booster burner at the back, yes; it is set to flicker yellow and should not soot. The main burner flame under the deck should look blue on natural gas.
