What Pinecrest does
to a pizza oven.

Franz Scherr ran a feed and supply store in Homestead before he and Louise Scherr opened Parrot Jungle in 1936, where birds were meant to fly free.

After Hurricane Andrew wrecked the village and the rest of South Miami-Dade in August 1992, rebuilding went slowly for years.

Custom-built pizza ovens

Designer builds may clad a pizza oven's dome in tile or stucco chosen to match the house, and patching a crack there is planned so the finish is matched and the dome is cured slowly before its surface is restored.

Backyard pizza nights

Where a backyard is built around a pool and a pizza oven, the oven's floor and burner work hardest, and floor tiles loosen and burner ports clog on a weekly cycle while the masonry around them needs little more than cleaning.

Family houses

Family backyards often put the pizza oven near where children play, and its door, flue and outer shell get very hot, so a clear zone around the oven and closing the gas at the end of the night are the simplest safeguards.

When a pizza oven
cannot wait in Pinecrest.

In Pinecrest as anywhere, these four put whoever stands at the oven's mouth, and the building around the flue, at risk, and they mean the gas or the power stays off until we arrive: a gas smell at the oven or its supply line, flame escaping the mouth or showing behind the panel or up the chimney, a hot electrical or burning smell, and smoke that fills the room instead of leaving by the flue.
