A domed wood-fired pizza oven finished in warm plaster on a masonry base on a patio, a pizza oven with a round arched mouth and a short chimney above it, a small wood fire burning at the back of the brick floor, a pizza on the stone floor near the mouth, the pizza oven clearly the subject, daylight, seasonless.

Pizza Oven Repair

On a Coyote pizza oven the opening minutes are spent on supply: the propane cylinder or the natural-gas shutoff, the regulator and the hose run to the oven.

Coyote pizza ovens,
specifically.

Coyote Outdoor Living sells two firebrick pizza ovens: the 40-inch Duomo, which burns wood only, and the 30-inch Hybrid Multi-Fuel oven, which bakes on a gas burner or on a wood fire. Both are insulated domes with a chimney and a door, so most visits are about draft, smoke, heat and the brick floor; on the hybrid we also look after the burner, its valve and a battery igniter.

Error codesCoyote's pizza ovens have no electronic control and publish no codes; the Duomo is a wood-burning dome, and the hybrid shows only a dial thermometer and a battery spark igniter. What the manuals ask you to read instead is the smoke, the flame at the mouth and a floor temperature taken with an infrared thermometer.

What is particular
to Coyote.

We service the Coyote Duomo wood-fired oven (C1PZ40WY, C1PZ40WMB, C1PZ40WC) and the 30-inch Hybrid Multi-Fuel oven in propane or natural gas (C1PZ30H models). The hybrid's burner, valve, regulator and igniter are gas parts; everything else, from the dome to the bricks and chimney, is shared ground between the two ovens.

One oven, two fuels

The hybrid's gas burner sits under a stone cover that you put in place before lighting wood, and an ash guard goes on when you cook with gas. A burner that will not light is often just that cover left in place, or ash that has worked its way into the ports.

A push-button igniter on a AAA cell

The hybrid lights its gas burner with a button igniter powered by a single AAA battery, after the knob has been held in to prime the burner. A dead or reversed battery is the first thing to rule out before anyone touches the valve.

Firebrick floor you can lift out

Both ovens bake on loose refractory bricks that come out for cleaning once the oven is cold. Coyote's warranty excludes micro veins and minor cracks in the bricks as normal for the material, so we look for bricks that have split or shifted rather than surface lines.

Smoke and flame are read, not measured

The built-in thermometer shows a rough air temperature, not the floor, and Coyote asks for a floor reading of 650°F with an infrared thermometer. Black smoke, flame curling out of the mouth or a slow heat-up usually trace to wet or soft wood, overloading, or a blocked chimney.

Parts

Coyote prints a parts list for the hybrid with numbers for the chimney, bricks, burner, valve, igniter, temperature gauge and door, so we order from the model and serial label. The Duomo manual carries its own list for the chimney, dome, bricks and door.

Repair or replace

A battery igniter, a burner, a thermometer, a door or a single brick is a routine fix on a Coyote oven. A dome that has cracked through its shell is the point where replacing the oven can make more sense.

Questions about
Coyote pizza ovens.

Why won't the gas burner on my Coyote hybrid pizza oven light?
Start with the simple things Coyote lists: the gas supply must be on, the stone burner cover must be off, and the knob should be held in for 5 to 10 seconds before you press the igniter. If there is still no spark, check the AAA battery and which way it faces.
My Coyote Duomo is putting out black smoke. What is wrong?
Black smoke means the fire is not burning cleanly. Coyote points to damp wood, softwood and bark as the usual causes; kiln-dried hardwood under 20% moisture and a strong flame normally clear it up.
Flames are coming out of the front of my Coyote pizza oven. Is that dangerous?
Yes, that is overfiring. Coyote says to close the door tightly and let the fire die down, and to hold off on more wood until it has. If flame is coming from the chimney, keep people back and call 911.
Are cracks in the Coyote firebricks covered?
Coyote's warranty treats micro veins and minor cracks in refractory bricks as normal for the material. A brick that has split into pieces or rocks under the peel should be replaced.
