West University Place took its name from its nearness to the Rice Institute, today Rice University.

West University Place incorporated because Houston was reluctant to run power lines that far from downtown, and the Harris County judge declared it a city on January 2, 1924.

After floods, the drainage channel known as the poor farm ditch was dredged in 1928, and in 1954 the Harris County Flood Control District widened it and lined it with concrete.

Many of its streets are named after authors, and one, Weslayan, is a misspelling of Wesleyan.
