Lighting a gas pizza oven takes gas at the burner, air mixed into it and a spark or a glowing igniter in exactly the right spot, all within a few seconds. Outdoor countertop and built-in ovens mostly use a push-button spark and a knob that must be held in while a thermocouple warms. Commercial deck ovens use either a standing pilot or electronic ignition that sparks, watches for a flame and shuts the gas if none appears. Conveyor ovens refuse to light at all until their blowers are running and an air switch confirms airflow. So a dark burner can have nothing broken: an empty propane tank, a regulator in its low-flow safety mode, a shutoff closed after cleaning, a battery gone in the spark module, or a cover still on an air intake. After that come spiders in the burner tube, a wet electrode after rain, an igniter worn or cracked, and a flame sensor too coated to see the flame. Every attempt leaves gas in the oven, so the rule is knob off, door open and a wait of several minutes, or as long as the manual asks, between tries. The 7 causes, cheapest first Answer these first 01 Do you hear the igniter click and see a spark, or is it silent? 02 Is there a faint gas smell at the mouth when the knob is on, or none? 03 Is it a propane tank, and does it feel light when lifted? 04 On a deck or conveyor oven, does it try, stop and show a light or a code? 05 Has the oven sat unused or uncovered through rain or a quiet season? ## Check these before you book. Gas pizza oven won't light: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything. 01 If the burner does not catch within a few seconds, turn the knob off, leave the door open and wait at least five minutes, or the time in the manual, before trying again. 02 Lift the propane tank to judge its level and make sure its valve and any shutoff are open. 03 With the knob off, close the tank, wait a minute, open it slowly, then light the way the manual shows. ### Also worth checking - On a push-button oven, fit a fresh battery in the spark module if it has one, and give a rain-soaked oven a dry day. - On a conveyor oven, check that the blowers are running and the intakes are uncovered before asking for heat. ### How soon does it need a visit? A dark burner is not urgent on its own. A gas smell is, and it has its own page. Holding it in lets gas flow while the thermocouple warms.
