Tampa General Hospital, a Level I trauma center and teaching hospital affiliated with the University of South Florida, stands at the northern tip of the islands. ## What Davis Islands does to a pizza oven. A canal fully cuts off part of the land, so Davis Islands is technically an archipelago, and filling one canal's end for the airport runway reduced the original three islands to two. Many of the original Mediterranean-style buildings, the Palace of Florence and Mirasol among them, still stand with national historic designation and local protection. Several blocks of East Davis Boulevard form the islands' commercial strip, where restaurants, cafes and bars line the sidewalks.
