Theosophists who settled Lomaland in the late 1890s grew most of their own food and planted eucalyptus and avocado, which gave that part of Point Loma its wooded look. ## What Point Loma does to a pizza oven. Sailors camped at La Playa in the 1830s gathered cattle hides for export and went up into the Point Loma hills to hunt jackrabbits and collect wood. Point Loma Village is the peninsula's commercial center, serving residents along with the yachting and sport fishing trade. The county's air pollution control district tells wood burners to use only clean, seasoned wood and never garbage, treated lumber or plastics.
