A branch of John's Pizzeria, the coal-oven Greenwich Village institution, opened on the Upper West Side in the 1980s. ## What Upper West Side does to a pizza oven. Broadway, the old Bloomingdale Road, forms the 66-block spine of the neighborhood. In 1962 the New York Central Railroad and a lithographers' union proposed Litho City, 12,000 apartments on platforms over the rail yards, the first of 40 years of plans for what became Riverside South. By 1960 part of the area was a rough stretch of tenements, and their demolition was held off so the film West Side Story could shoot exteriors there. [All of New York Metro](https://pizzaovenrepair.center/locations/new-york/) ### Tower living A gas pizza oven on a high terrace catches crosswinds that blow straight into its open mouth and push the flame off the burner, so a visit up there checks the oven's placement, its wind shelter and the gas supply before any part is judged. ### Tight patios and small shops On a small patio a countertop pizza oven often stands inches from siding or a fence, and its hot back and chimney need the clearances the maker lists, since scorched wood beside it is the first sign the oven is set too close. ### Older housing stock Houses from another era often carry gas lines that were extended in stages, and a pizza oven added at the end of that chain may not get the pressure its burner needs, so a slow preheat is measured at the oven's inlet before its valve is blamed. ## A visit in Upper West Side.
