Of the roughly 250 cast-iron buildings still standing in New York City, most are in SoHo. ## What SoHo does to a pizza oven. Many of those iron facades were hung on interiors framed in wood, and an 1899 building code began requiring masonry behind cast-iron fronts. In the 19th century Broadway between Canal and Houston Streets was the entertainment center of New York, a busy strip of theaters and shops. New residential buildings on the district's empty lots were first allowed in 2005. [All of New York Metro](https://pizzaovenrepair.center/locations/new-york/) ### Older housing stock Older neighborhoods keep some of the country's longest-running pizzerias, whose deck and brick ovens have been rebuilt around the same flue for decades, and a smoke or draw problem there is traced up the old chimney before anything in the oven is replaced. ### Tower living Most tower rules keep wood fires and open-flame pizza ovens off private balconies, so pizza in a high-rise comes from a shared gas oven on the amenity terrace or the pizzeria at street level, and a shared oven's igniter and door wear out under many hands. ### Tight patios and small shops On a small patio a countertop pizza oven often stands inches from siding or a fence, and its hot back and chimney need the clearances the maker lists, since scorched wood beside it is the first sign the oven is set too close. ## A visit in SoHo. In SoHo as anywhere, these four put whoever stands at the oven's mouth, and the building around the flue, at risk, and they mean the gas or the power stays off until we arrive: a gas smell at the oven or its supply line, flame escaping the mouth or showing behind the panel or up the chimney, a hot electrical or burning smell, and smoke that fills the room instead of leaving by the flue.
