A Malibu pizza oven may face the Pacific on one side and chaparral on the other, so its steel flue and door hinges pit in the salt while its chimney needs a spark screen kept free of ash, and weekend-only houses find the dome damp after a quiet month. ## What Malibu does to a pizza oven. Malibu adopted the county's restaurant grading ordinance in June 1998. Before cityhood, residents fought county plans for an offshore freeway, a nuclear power plant and sewer lines to replace septic tanks. Malibu Potteries once employed over 100 workers making decorative tiles, until fire ravaged its factory near the pier in 1931. The 1993 firestorm was two separate fires, one through most of central Malibu and Old Topanga and a larger one north of Encinal Canyon. [All of Los Angeles](https://pizzaovenrepair.center/locations/los-angeles/) ### On the water When a hurricane or a coastal storm is forecast, a pizza oven by salt water has its gas closed at the shutoff, its door shut and its chimney capped, and afterward it stays cold until the burner box and the dome have been checked for water. ### Seasonal houses Someone keeping watch over an empty seasonal house can do the oven a favor by lifting its cover after heavy rain and looking for standing water on the floor or a gas smell at the shutoff; if either turns up, the oven stays unlit until a technician has looked. ### Backyard pizza nights Pizza ovens near a pool catch splashes of chlorinated water on their steel and on the dome, and water soaking into a hot dome crackles and spalls its surface, so the oven is kept covered or placed where splashes cannot reach it. ## A visit in Malibu. In Malibu as anywhere, these four put whoever stands at the oven's mouth, and the building around the flue, at risk, and they mean the gas or the power stays off until we arrive: a gas smell at the oven or its supply line, flame escaping the mouth or showing behind the panel or up the chimney, a hot electrical or burning smell, and smoke that fills the room instead of leaving by the flue.
