West University homes often choose a countertop gas pizza oven on a covered back porch, and under a low porch ceiling the oven's hot exhaust needs space above it, so the ceiling clearance and the maker's spacing come first on a visit. ## What West University does to a pizza oven. West University Place took its name from its nearness to the Rice Institute, today Rice University. West University Place incorporated because Houston was reluctant to run power lines that far from downtown, and the Harris County judge declared it a city on January 2, 1924. After floods, the drainage channel known as the poor farm ditch was dredged in 1928, and in 1954 the Harris County Flood Control District widened it and lined it with concrete. Many of its streets are named after authors, and one, Weslayan, is a misspelling of Wesleyan. Also known as West University Place. [All of Houston](https://pizzaovenrepair.center/locations/houston/) ### Family houses Family backyards often put the pizza oven near where children play, and its door, flue and outer shell get very hot, so a clear zone around the oven and closing the gas at the end of the night are the simplest safeguards. ### Mixed housing A pizza oven inherited with a house may have been built by a local mason with no name or model plate, so the first visit measures the dome, the floor and the flue before choosing refractory materials that match. ### Tight patios and small shops On a small patio a countertop pizza oven often stands inches from siding or a fence, and its hot back and chimney need the clearances the maker lists, since scorched wood beside it is the first sign the oven is set too close. ## A visit in West University.
