Highland Park was a dry community, with the sale of alcoholic drinks prohibited, from its founding in 1869 until November 1, 1900. ## What Highland Park does to a pizza oven. A bluff about 100 feet high runs along 6 miles of its Lake Michigan shore, cut by wooded ravines reaching up to a mile inland. Frank Lloyd Wright's Willits House is among the Highland Park landmarks on the National Register of Historic Places. Two German immigrants founded a lakeside town on the site in 1847, and Port Clinton, just to the south, got a federally funded lighthouse in 1854. [All of Chicago](https://pizzaovenrepair.center/locations/chicagoland/) ### On a lake Afternoon wind off a lake can blow into a pizza oven's mouth and push smoke back out at the cook, so on a lakeside patio the oven works best with its opening turned away from the water and a chimney tall enough to draw against the gusts. ### Older housing stock Houses from another era often carry gas lines that were extended in stages, and a pizza oven added at the end of that chain may not get the pressure its burner needs, so a slow preheat is measured at the oven's inlet before its valve is blamed. ### Mixed housing Streets of old and new houses hold pizza ovens of every age, from a mason-built brick dome decades old to a new countertop gas model with a digital thermometer, and the technician carries parts and refractory mortar for both. ## A visit in Highland Park.
